BACKGROUND:
Joel was born in DeLand, Florida and graduated from DeLand High School in 1955 and the University of the South (Sewanee) in 1959, with a BS degree in mathematics. In college he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity. After serving in the Navy for about three years he married Anne Lawrence on June 1, 1963 and started law school at the University of Florida, in the fall of 1963 where he was a member of the Law Review and the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity.

After graduation in 1955, he was employed by the firm of MacMillan, Newett and Adams in Delray Beach, Florida and practiced with that firm until April of 1985, when he joined the firm of Jones and Foster as the managing partner for their Delray Beach branch office. He left that firm in April of 1993 and opened his own practice in Delray when his daughter, Elizabeth, was graduating from Stetson Law School.
